MSC Foundation: 2024 achievements drive change and inspire hope
March 2025
In 2024, the MSC Foundation upheld its promise to protect the environment, support communities and inspire hope, impacting over 135,000 lives worldwide.
The work of the MSC Foundation focuses on four pillars:
- Community support: Providing essential aid and resources to vulnerable groups.
- Environmental conservation: Supporting marine conservation and restoration.
- Education: Empowering future generations through knowledge and skills.
- Emergency relief: Responding to disasters to save lives and rebuild communities.
Here’s how this extraordinary year unfolded:
Oceans and ecosystems
The Super Coral Programme made remarkable progress and added 452 coral fragments to its nursery—a 480% increase from 2023. At the Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, construction began on the Marine Conservation Centre, which is due to open in April 2025. In partnership with IUCN, the programme supported the global assessment that updated the status of 892 coral species in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. In Formentera, Spain, a collaboration with Mission Blue led to the planting of over 15,500 Posidonia plants, a type of Mediterranean seaweed. In Qatar, the Foundation is working with Earthna on environmental conservation efforts to restore Qatar’s mangrove forests, with 28,900 seedlings planted in an inland nursery so far.
Community support
The MSC Foundation’s partnership with Mercy Ships provided life-changing healthcare in Africa, treating 5,027 patients, carrying out 13,207 dental procedures and training 923 professionals. To double their impact, MSC and Mercy Ships are building a new vessel, the Atlantic Mercy, set for delivery in 2028.
Building brighter futures
In Côte d’Ivoire, MSC’s partnership with UNICEF focused on children’s education, women’s livelihoods and recycling. It refurbished 29 classrooms, distributed 5,000 school kits, reached over 10,970 children and trained nearly 19,000 teachers.
Emergency relief
The Foundation responded to 11 emergencies across 12 countries, aiding over 39,000 people. From Brazil to, Mozambique, and Southeast Asia, MSC Foundation delivered critical support.
Local initiatives
The Marevivo partnership reached over 3,000 students through training and marine conservation education and launched Il Mare a Scuola, a major campaign bringing ocean education to Italy’s classrooms. In Geneva, an oncology programme advanced cancer research thanks to a digital biobank of tumour samples.
Looking ahead
As we reflect on 2024’s achievements, we are more inspired than ever to continue our mission of transforming lives and protecting our planet. Together, we can create a brighter, more sustainable future.
